New Delhi, April 25 (Hindustan Reporter) A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court demanding that the arrested politicians be allowed to campaign through video conferencing during the Lok Sabha elections. The petition has been filed by Amarjeet Gupta, a final year law student.
Advocate Mohammad Imran Ahmed, on behalf of the petitioner, has said that guidelines should be issued to the Election Commission to allow the arrested leaders to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections through video conferencing. The petition demands that if any leader or candidate is arrested, the same should be immediately informed to the Election Commission.
In the petition, the petitioner has raised questions on the timing of the arrest of the leaders. The petition states that after the announcement of the Model Code of Conduct by the Election Commission, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal was arrested. The petition states that the general public has the right to know the stand of the concerned politician under Article 19(1)(A) of the Constitution. It has been said in the petition that the voters of the country and especially Delhi have the right to get information about the ideology and goals of the leader of the national party.
The petition states that leaders of political parties are also being deprived of the right to campaign during elections. The petitioner had given a representation in this regard to various authorities but no response was given, after which the petitioner has approached the High Court.
