Jonny Bairstow scored a brilliant century in the match, helping Punjab Kings set a new world record for the highest run chase in T20 cricket. Kolkata Knight Riders set a target of 262 runs for Punjab Kings, which Punjab achieved with eight balls to spare and defeated them by 8 wickets.

With the help of Bairstow’s unbeaten 108 runs in 48 balls with the help of 9 sixes and 8 fours, Shashank Sindh’s 68* runs in 28 balls and Prabhasimran’s 54 runs in 20 balls, Punjab Kings created the record of highest run chase in T20 history. Kolkata was defeated by eight wickets with 8 balls remaining. Punjab achieved the target of 282 runs in 18.4 overs at the loss of two wickets. There were 18 sixes in Kolkata’s innings and 24 sixes in Punjab’s innings. Another world record was created with a total of 42 sixes hit in the match played at Eden Gardens.
A historic victory for Punjab
Chasing a huge target of 262 runs to win, Prabhsimran and Bairstow made a partnership of 96 runs in 36 balls for Punjab. Bairstow scored 85 runs in 39 balls with Rossouw and 84 not out in 2 balls with Shashank Singh to give Punjab a historic victory. Shashank scored unbeaten 68 runs in 28 balls with the help of eight sixes and two fours.
The biggest run chase before this took place on 26 March 2023.
Earlier on March 26 last year, South Africa had scored 259/4 runs against West Indies and made the biggest run chase in T20. In IPL, Rajasthan Royals scored a record 224 runs against KKR at Eden Gardens on 16 April 2024. In this way Rajasthan equalized its 4 year old match.
Record of most sixes
In the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings, 42 sixes were hit, which is the highest in any T20 match so far. This surpassed the total of 38 sixes hit in the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad last month and the total of 38 sixes hit in the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
