New Delhi: After the ban on export was lifted, wholesale prices of onion have started increasing in the markets. Last week, the central government had lifted the ban on export of onion. After this, the wholesale price of onion has increased once again.
Experts say that permission to export onion has been given with some conditions. In such a situation, there has been a temporary increase in onion prices, but there is no possibility of further increase in future. The reason for this is that exports cannot be made at less than the fixed price.
Last week, on May 3, the central government had announced the lifting of the ban on onion export. On this day, the wholesale price of onion in Maharashtra’s onion market Lasalgaon was Rs 100. 900 to Rs. Which has increased to Rs 1,875 today. 1,000 to Rs. 2,400 per quintal.
Similarly, in Mumbai’s Vashi Mandi, the wholesale price of onion fell from Rs 875-2,000 to Rs 1,250-2,750 per quintal during this period. During this period, the wholesale price of onion in Delhi’s Azadpur Mandi has increased from Rs 875-2,000 to Rs 2,750 per quintal.
Onion prices have increased after the decision to lift the ban on exports. But this rise in onion prices is unlikely to continue for long as an export limit of $550 per tonne has been imposed, which means it cannot be exported at a price lower than this.
At this price, export to Europe and Gulf countries is possible. But export to countries like Bangladesh and Colombo is not possible because these countries have to pay high prices for Indian onions.
Indian Vegetable Producers Association said that allowing export with conditions will not benefit farmers. However, onion prices have improved temporarily. But it is difficult to maintain this momentum further. Onion is very beneficial at this time. Therefore, we do not see any increase in onion prices in future.
