Lemon Auction: The temple of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu is famous throughout the world for its grandeur, beauty and opulence. Every year a large number of devotees from all over the world come here for darshan. One such famous temple of Tamil Nadu is Villupuram. This temple is very much in discussion at present. Panguni Uthiram puja festival has recently been completed in this temple. After this, during the puja, bidding was done for 9 lemons kept in the temple. And these nine lemons were sold for Rs 2.3 lakh. There is a special reason behind these lemons, which are available in the market for just 20 to 30 rupees, being sold for lakhs of rupees. People believe that these lemons kept in puja have miraculous powers.
Lemons kept in the sacred spear of the gods
This festival is celebrated every year in Villupuram temple. The tradition of this festival is centuries old. Over the years, the lemons used in the puja are auctioned on the last day of the festival. This year too, nine lemons were kept in the temple which were auctioned for Rs 2.3 lakh. These lemons are placed on the sacred spears of the gods. There is a belief about this lemon that by extracting its juice and drinking it mixed with water, childless couples get a child and also increases happiness and prosperity in the family. Due to this belief, people are eager to buy lemon after the puja. People here believe that the spear of Lord Muruga has magical powers which gets absorbed in this lemon.
It is noteworthy that this festival lasts for nine days in the temple, every day the priest of the temple places a lemon in a spear. In this way nine lemons are collected for nine days. All the lemons are auctioned on the last day of the festival. People believe that the lemon used on the first day has the most powers. A couple from the village bought the first day’s lemon for Rs 50,000. In this way all the lemons were auctioned for a total of Rs 2,36,100.
