Indians are at the top among the people sending money from abroad. Presenting the figures, the United Nations Migration Agency said that in the year 2022, 111 billion dollars were sent to India from other countries and this figure is the highest compared to any other country in the world. With remittances of $111 billion, India has become the first country to cross the $100 billion mark where such a huge amount of money has been sent abroad in a single year. There are about 20 million NRIs living in other countries, who send billions of dollars, called remittances, to their families every year.
Migration report released
The International Org.zation for Migration (IOM) yesterday released its World Migration Report 2024, which said India, Mexico, China, Philippines and France are the top five countries receiving the most remittances. Along with this, Pakistan and Bangladesh are also included in the top 10 list. In this regard, there are four Asian countries in the list of top 10 remittance recipients.
4 out of top 10 countries receiving the most money are from Asia
According to the report, in the year 2010, 53.48 billion dollars came to India as remittances. NRIs sent $68.19 billion to their families in 2015 and $83.15 billion in 2020. The report said South Asia has the highest number of migrant workers, making it the leading recipient of remittances worldwide. Pakistan received $30 billion and Bangladesh $21.5 billion as remittances.
These rupees are like a lifeline
The report also said that the money sent by migrant workers working abroad is a lifeline for many people, but many migrant workers here are facing many problems including financial crisis. The economic burden on them increases due to migration costs. During work one has to face things like abuse and xenophobia in the workplace. Xenophobia means dislike towards foreigners.
Most of the citizens of India live abroad
Indians have the highest number of people going to other countries to study and work. India has the largest number of migrants in the world. About 1 crore 80 lakh Indians live abroad. This constitutes 1.3 percent of the country’s total population, most of whom live in the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and Saudi Arabia.
Most migrants go to Gulf countries
The report said that most of the people from countries around the world go to Gulf countries. The share of migrants in the total population of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries is still high. It is 88 percent in UAE, 73 percent in Kuwait and 77 percent in Qatar. India ranks 13th in terms of foreign citizens coming to the country. 44 lakh 80 thousand tourists stay here.
Most people go to America to study
Most of the children from all over the world go to study in America. In the year 2021, 8 lakh 33 thousand tourist students went for studies. 6,01,000 students went to study in the United Kingdom, 3,78,000 in Australia, 3,76,000 in Germany and 3,18,000 in Canada. The number of people going abroad for studies is highest in China, followed by India. In the year 2021, 5,08,000 Indian students went to study abroad, whereas in China this number is double. According to the report, the top 10 countries for movement of citizens between the two countries are India-UAE, India-US, India. -Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh-India. This means that citizens of these countries stay in each other’s country most of the time for work, study and other reasons.
