Gyanvapi Masjid Case: The Supreme Court has stayed the survey in the Gyanvapi Masjid of Varanasi till 5 pm on Wednesday, 26 July. Meanwhile, the mosque committee has been given a chance to approach the High Court. The Anjuman Committee, which oversees the management of the Gyanvapi Masjid, had filed a petition against the Varanasi District Court’s order to conduct a survey of the mosque complex adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, which was ordered by the Supreme Court during the hearing.

This appeal did not get a chance – Anjuman Committee

Senior advocate Huzaifa Ahmadi, appearing for the Anjuman Committee, told the bench that the order for the survey was given on Friday. We did not get a chance to appeal and the survey started. He said that if excavation is written in the order, then we should get a chance to appeal.

When the CJI raised the question that there would be excavation during the survey, the UP government’s lawyer Tushar Mehta said that the survey would be done with modern technology. There will be no harm in this. Senior advocate Shyam Dewan, appearing for the Hindu side, also said that no excavation will be done in the survey.

Ahmadi told the bench, “We had requested to stay for two-three days for the survey but they did not stay.” We believe that the time for scientific survey has not yet come. The first case has to be seen on merits. Ahmadi said, excavations are being done on the western wall.

UP government’s lawyer Tushar Mehta told the court that I have taken instructions. The government has not laid any brick there. Mehta said, there will be no harm for a week. Till then they can go to the High Court, but Ahmadis are adamant on stopping the survey.
