Dehradun, 23 April (HS). Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has congratulated and congratulated Dr. Yashwant Singh of Uttarakhand on being honored with Padma Shri in the field of literature and education. Also, the Chief Minister wrote on social media
Chief Minister Dhami said that there is a long story of the life and works of Dr. Yashwant Singh, who was awarded the Padma Shri award in the field of literature and education. Dr. Yashwant has been honored with Padma Shri by President Draupadi Murmu at the civil investiture ceremony held on Monday in New Delhi.
The Chief Minister said that Dr. Yashwant Singh Katoch is a renowned scholar who has done pioneering work on the history, archaeology, art and architecture of the Central Himalayan region. Despite being 89 years old, Dr. Katoch continues to contribute actively in his field. He is currently busy writing his latest work “Inscriptions of the Central Himalayas”. The authenticity of Dr. Katoch’s work is reflected in the inclusion of his works in the university curriculum and their recognition in competitive examinations.
Born on 27 December 1935 in Masson village in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, Dr. Katoch pursued higher education from Agra University and obtained a Master’s degree with ‘First Class’ in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archeology in 1974. After this he obtained PhD degree in History and Archeology from Garhwal University. His career began as a teacher and in 1995 he retired as a principal from the State Education Service.
In 1973, Dr. Katoch was one of the founding members of the Uttarakhand Research Institute, a state level institute. Where he served in various positions like Vice President of the Institute, Director and Editor of Journal Uttarakhand Sanskrit. His primary area of research focused on history, archaeology, art and architecture. He has made significant contributions to this field for more than 55 years. This is evident from his extensive works. Some notable Hindi works include Archeology of Central Himalayas, Military Tradition of Uttarakhand, Footprints of Culture, Art of Central Himalayas, Architectural Studies, History of Garhwal, New History of Uttarakhand, ET Atkinson’s History of Himalayan Districts, Critical Studies, Garhwali. Major inscriptions include Yashodhara (Essay on History, Culture and Archaeology) and Bharatvarshiya Historical Site.

Dr. Katoch has been appointed as a member of State and Central Government, Culture and Heritage Tourism Committee, Government of Uttarakhand, Advisory Committee of Uttarakhand Archives, Cultural Department of Uttarakhand Government, Culture Promotion Committee, Government of Uttarakhand, Regional Mission Monitoring Committee, Dehradun Circle, ASI, National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities, ASI, has been designated in SLIC.

Dr. Katoch has received various awards and honors. These include ‘Princep Award’ (1965) from the Governor and honor from Akhil Garhwal Sabha (2002) for excellent work in the history, culture and archeology of the Himalayas, ‘Senior Vibhuti Award’ (2006) from the Sanskrit, Literature and Arts Council from the Government of Uttarakhand, Pahar Foundation Silver Award (2010), Award (2021) from Himalaya Sahitya and Kala Parishad, Srinagar for excellent work in Hindi language and literature.
