Makar Sankranti, the first festival of the year celebrated by Hindus, holds special significance in Hinduism. On this day Lord Surya moves towards the north. With Makar Sankranti, the inauspicious period (Kharmas) ends and auspicious works begin. Donating on Makar Sankranti is considered very auspicious, in which donating sesame seeds has special significance.

It is believed that the virtue of taking a holy bath on Makar Sankranti increases m.fold, which brings happiness and prosperity in a person’s life. There are two types of sesame seeds: white sesame and black sesame. Most people like to donate white sesame seeds on Makar Sankranti. According to traditions, donating black sesame seeds on Makar Sankranti is considered very auspicious. Therefore, it is advisable to donate black sesame seeds on this day.

Black moles are associated with Lord Sh. (Sh.), who is the son of Lord Surya. To please both these deities, people offer water with black sesame seeds, which is offered to Lord Surya and Lord Sh.. It is believed that this act brings blessings from both the gods.

 

White sesame seeds can also be donated

While black sesame seeds have more importance on Makar Sankranti, donating white sesame seeds is also considered acceptable. White sesame seeds are related to Lord Surya and it is believed that by offering them on this day one gets the blessings of Sun God. Therefore donating white sesame seeds brings happiness and prosperity to the house.

Ultimately, Makar Sankranti is a day of religious significance, marked by rituals, prayers and acts of charity. Donating sesame seeds, especially black sesame seeds, on this occasion is considered virtuous and auspicious.
