There is never short of talent when it comes to Mumbai cricket’s supply line of players in age group cricket and Tanish Shetty is a name that is up and coming.
The 16-year-old from RA Podar College has been performing exceedingly well for Mumbai in the Vijay Merchant Trophy with two hundreds and three fifties in the tournament.
Tanish’s scintillating knock against Madhya Pradesh was the highlight of the season for him apart from some other worthy contributions.
“The season has been really good but unfortunately our team lost in the semifinal. I had two hundreds and three fifties in the entire tournament. The first hundred was a knock of 162 runs in the first match against Madhya Pradesh where our team was struggling at 80/5. From that stage we scored 350 runs, it helped our team win outright with the bonus point. Then I scored a fifty against Kerala in the second match, a knock of 78 runs.
In the third match, I scored a fifty against Andhra, 57 runs, in that match also we won the match outright. In the fourth match, I scored 69 runs in the second innings against Hyderabad. That match was a first innings draw. In the quarterfinals again, our team was 120/4 and needed to chase 265 runs to qualify to the semis.”
With a good coaching support around him, Tanish looks to up the ante in the coming year.
“My coach is Sandesh Gawle sir. He is a very good and experienced coach who helped me a lot throughout the season. The assistant coach Mr Kaustubh Pawar was also very nice and I also learnt a lot from him. I learnt that no matter what the situation you have to be there for the team and never give up,” he added.
Tanish does have cricketing genes given his father Nishit Shetty’s experience of having played First Class cricket featuring in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai and Tripura. Nishit Shetty has eight First Class hundreds to his credit.
Currently playing for the Parel Sporting Club, Tanish is aiming to prepare for the under-19s now that his under-16 season is over.
The young lad balances cricket training and fitness based on his time.
” Right now, I do my cricket practice in the evening and when it comes to fitness, I don’t have a fixed schedule but whenever I get the time I work on it. Earlier, I used to go and run three days at the beach and two days in the gym.”
Tanish’s aim for the next five years is to a big one.
“My aim is to make it to the Indian Test team.”
With his role model being his father and his favourite cricketer being Virat Kohli, Tanish has his priorities set rig
