Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh: In a heartbreaking incident from Saharanpur’s Kurdikheda village, a 22-year-old man died by suicide after his girlfriend refused to elope with him. The young man, identified as Samrej from Barugarh village, ended his life by hanging himself from a tree using the girl’s dupatta early Sunday (April 6) morning.

What Exactly Happened?

According to a report by Aaj Tak, Samrej had been in a relationship with a girl from his village for the past two to three years. Despite their plans to marry, their families strongly opposed the union due to religious differences. On Sunday morning around 4:00 AM, Samrej called the girl to meet him in a field roughly 500 meters from the village. After speaking for nearly two hours, he reportedly urged her to elope, but she declined.

“I explained to him that we could convince our families together. But he wasn’t ready to listen,” the girl was quoted as saying by Aaj Tak. “I got angry and started walking home. I hadn’t gone far when he snatched my dupatta and ran toward a tree.”

As she ran after him, pleading with him not to take any drastic step, Samrej reportedly climbed the tree and tied the dupatta around a branch. Despite her desperate cries to stop, he hanged himself.

“I climbed up and managed to untie the noose, but by the time he fell, he had stopped breathing,” the girl told the publication. She then clung to his lifeless body, crying, until villagers and the police arrived.

Family Pressure Behind Tragedy, Say Locals

Local residents reported that both families had forbidden the couple from meeting after learning about their relationship. The girl’s family had also begun searching for a potential groom for her. The police have taken the body for postmortem and are conducting further investigation into the case.

Officials have not ruled out any possibility and are speaking to the families. No official complaint has been registered yet, as per the police.
