The WTC points table saw a stir as Pakistan opened their account with a 4-wicket win against Sri Lanka in the first Test at the Galle International Stadium. With this victory, Pakistan secured the second position in the points table with 100 per cent record. Meanwhile, India under the leadership of Rohit Sharma continues to hold on to the number one position.

So far six teams have started their journey in the third edition of the World Test Championship, while Bangladesh, New Zealand and South Africa are yet to play a match.

Team India won the first match of the ongoing two-match Test series against the West Indies by an innings and 141 runs, taking them to the first position in the WTC points table. On the other hand, Pakistan’s win against Sri Lanka has propelled them to the second spot.

The Ashes 2023 between England and Australia is also going on. Australia, captained by Pat Cummins, is ahead with a 2-1 lead in the three matches played so far. The Australian team has a win rate of 61.11 per cent, while England are fourth with a win rate of 27.78 per cent.

In the Galle Test, Sri Lanka managed to score 312 in their first innings, with Dhananjaya de Silva’s crucial 122 helping them reach this score. Pakistan bowlers Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed took three wickets each.

In reply, Pakistan suffered a poor start but Saud Shakeel’s brilliant double century (208 runs) helped them post 461 runs and take a vital 149-run lead over the hosts. Agha Salman also contributed a brilliant inning of 83 runs. In the second innings, Ramesh Mendis started the innings for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s second innings ended for 279, leaving Pakistan a target of 131 to win. De Silva’s 83 and Nishan Madushka’s 52 contributed to their total.

Despite the early setbacks, Pakistan successfully chased down the target with six wickets to spare, mainly thanks to Imam-ul-Haq’s half-century and Saud Shakeel’s earlier double century in the first innings.

The WCT Points Table remains fiercely competitive as teams try to secure their positions and earn points in this most popular format Test cricket tournament.
