Western Railway has emerged as the best-performing zone in Indian Railways, achieving a remarkable 95% punctuality in Mail/Express trains.

Additionally, during the financial year 2024-25, Western Railway (WR) completed 346 km of New Lines, Gauge Conversion, and Doubling work—the highest by any railway zone in this period.

WR also surpassed its electrification target, completing 197 Route Kilometers (RKM) against a goal of 191 RKM. With this, 100% of Western Railway is now electrified.

Furthermore, WR successfully installed the latest version of KAVACH (Ver. 4.0) safety technology. In FY 2024-25, KAVACH was installed on 644 RKM, with train trials set to commence on 205 RKM.

WR also constructed 140 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) in 2024-25, the highest across Indian Railways.

“WR has laid the longest length of W-beam fencing on Indian Railways, with 561 km installed during 2024-25. This has significantly reduced cattle runovers, contributing to higher punctuality and safety,” said an official.

WR also leads all Indian Railways zones in eliminating Level Crossing Gates, removing 108 manned crossings in FY 2024-25.

Apart from that WR installed 410 Weldable Cast Manganese Steel (WCMS) Crossings, the highest in Indian Railways, improving riding comfort and passenger safety.

“Utilization of track machines like Dynamic Tampers and Ballast Cleaning Machines has been the best in Indian Railways in FY 2024-25, underscoring WR’s commitment to asset maintenance and safety,” the official added.

Central Railway Leads in Non-Fare Revenue

On the other hand, Central Railway (CR) has surpassed all other railway zones in Non-Fare Revenue (NFR) earnings, achieving a record-breaking ₹131.86 crore in FY 2024-25—7.77% higher than the previous year’s earnings of ₹122.35 crore.

“Recognizing Central Railway’s leadership in innovative revenue generation, the Railway Board set an ambitious target of ₹137.30 crore, the highest for any zone,” said a CR official.

Mumbai Division of Central Railway has also become the first division in Indian Railways to achieve Non-Fare Revenue earnings of ₹100 crore for FY 2024-25.

“It is also the first among all 68 divisions of Indian Railways to retain this position for the last three years,” said the official.

Unmatched Performance in Ticket Checking

Central Railway continues to set benchmarks in ticket checking, detecting 38 lakh cases and generating an impressive ₹203.41 crore in revenue in FY 2024-25.

“To enhance passenger comfort and prevent overcrowding in reserved compartments, a strategic shift in penalty enforcement was implemented in June 2024. Instead of imposing fines for the entire journey, irregular passengers are now charged only up to the detection point and deboarded, ensuring a more comfortable journey for reserved passengers. Special drives are conducted on weekends and festival periods for effective enforcement” said an official.
