World Turtle Day is observed every year on May 23. On this speical day, know some interesting facts about turtles:
Some turtles can live for 50 to over 100 years, especially in the wild or in protected environments.
A turtle’s shell is made of over 50 bones and is actually part of its skeleton. It cannot come out of its shell—it’s fused to the spine and ribs.
Sea turtles can migrate thousands of miles and still return to the exact beach where they were born to lay eggs.
Many turtle species are endangered due to habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and poaching.
In many cultures, turtles symbolise wisdom, longevity, and stability.
While land turtles (tortoises) are slow, sea turtles are strong swimmers and can glide through oceans at speeds up to 22 mph (35 km/h).
