The Bhandup police have booked a man for abetment of suicide after his wife hanged herself in the Tembipada area of Bhandup. The FIR was registered following a complaint by the deceased brother, and the police are currently investigating the matter.

According to the complaint, frequent quarrels occurred between them due to their inability to have children. According to police sources, on December 29, as Sheetal Khanvilkar hanged herself, her husband’s brother informed Sheetal’s brother, Uday Khot, about the incident, stating that they were taking her to the hospital.

At the time, Uday was in Kolkata and immediately asked his maternal uncle to visit the scene. Police began an investigation following their report. When Uday returned from Kolkata, he provided additional details about the harassment faced by his sister, leading police to register an FIR against Sheetal’s husband, Mahesh Khanvilkar, under section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the BNS Act.

Uday told the police that Mahesh married Sheetal after his first marriage ended. However, from the beginning of their marriage, the couple faced issues with infertility. Despite undergoing IVF treatment, they were unable to conceive, which led to frequent arguments. The couple eventually moved into a separate home in Bhandup after family intervention. Although the initial months were peaceful, Mahesh later developed a drinking habit, which escalated into frequent physical abuse and harassment of Sheetal. Uday claimed that the constant abuse drove his sister to take her own life.
