Mumbai: A woman has been booked for impersonating a senior officer from the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), and duping a senior citizen from Dadar and two others of Rs 1 crore in total by promising them MHADA flats.

The complainant, a 71-year-old resident of Ram Maruti Road, Dadar, currently resides in Pune with her sister due to her age. In 2021, she met Bhakti Kandarkar at Raheja Hospital, where the latter introduced herself as a senior MHADA official. Kandarkar allegedly convinced the complainant’s sister-in-law that she could secure MHADA flats through her high-ranking position.

In December 2021, the complainant invited Kandarkar to her residence, where she and her sister met the accused. Bhakti claimed to oversee MHADA housing lotteries, and informed them about an upcoming lottery for flats in Goregaon’s Unnat Nagar scheme. She promised a 2BHK flat for Rs 20 lakh.

Trusting her claims, the complainant paid Rs 20 lakh, her sister paid another Rs 20 lakh, and her sister-in-law transferred Rs 60 lakh to Kandarkar. However, the accused neither delivered the promised MHADA flats nor returned their money.

Realising they had been defrauded, the complainant, her sister and sister-in-law filed a complaint at the Dadar Police Station. Kandarkar has been booked by the Dadar Police and investigations are underway.
