London, 8 July (Hindustan). Indian star badminton player Rohan Bopanna and his men’s doubles partner Matthew Ebden of Australia have advanced to the second round of Wimbledon. Bopanna-Ebden defeated the Argentinian pair of Guillermo Duran and Tomás Echeverri in their first round match.
The sixth seeded Indo-Australian pair beat the Argentinian pair 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (10-8) in their opening match that lasted two hours and 12 minutes.
Bopanna, 43, and Ebden, 35, who won two doubles titles on the ATP Tour earlier this year, will next face unseeded British pair of Jacob Fearnley and Johannes on Sunday.
Bopanna and Ebden won the Qatar Open title in February. In March, Bopanna became the oldest player to win a Master Series tournament (ATP 1000) at Indian Wells in the United States. Bopanna broke the record held by Canadian D.el Nestor, who won the Cincinnati Masters in 2015 at the age of 42.
Bopanna will pair up with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski in the mixed doubles on Saturday. The sixth seeded pair, who won the French Open crown in 2017, will open against the unseeded pairing of Ivan Dodig of Croatia and Latisha Chan of Chinese Taipei.
