South African and Mumbai Indians opener Ryan Rickelton was called back in the IPL 2025 game against the SunRisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. In a contentious decision, the third umpire decided to rule the left-handed batter as he observed that Heinrich Klaasen’s keeping gloves were in line with the stumps when the delivery approached the batter.

The moment occurred in the seventh over of the innings as SunRisers’ captain Pat Cummins brought on leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari for his first. With Ansari keeping Rickelton for three consecutive deliveries, the Proteas batter went for the cut shot but found the fielder at cover where Pat Cummins took a good catch. Although Rickelton was almost beyond the boundary line, he was called back by the umpire, making the Orange Army frustrated. Since it was a no-ball, Mumbai Indians also got a free hit.

Although Rickelton was eventually dismissed by Harshal Patel in the very next over for 31, the southpaw had done some damage to the SunRisers’ hopes of winning the game.

As per Law 27.3.1, an umpire can signal a No ball if the wicket-keeper collects the ball in front of the stumps or in line with the stumps before the ball touches the batter or the body of the batter. Although Klaasen didn’t need to collect the ball as it didn’t come to him, his gloves were still in line with the stumps.

Mumbai Indians had won the toss and opted to field first

Earlier, Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and has elected to bowl first at the Wankhede Stadium against the SunRisers Hyderabad as they look to continue their winning run in IPL 2025. Pandya suggested that dew factor is the reason he elects to field first and both sides announced an unchanged XI.

MI playing XI: Ryan Rickelton(w), Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya(c), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Karn Sharma.

SRH playing XI: Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen(w), Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Aniket Verma, Pat Cummins(c), Harshal Patel, Zeeshan Ansari, Mohammed Shami, Eshan Malinga
