It can be common at night to not sleep occasionally, especially when we are under stress. But if this problem persists daily, it may be a sign of insomnia (insomnia). A recent study has revealed that more use of mobile or other screens at night may increase the risk of insomnia at 59 percent at night.
The study was conducted by Norway’s Norwegian Institute of Public Health, which included 45,202 youths aged 18 to 28 years.
What does study say?
-
The use of screen at bedtime affects sleep quality.
-
Due to this, sleep time can be reduced by an average to 24 minutes.
-
What is being seen on the screen (eg social media or other apps), its effect is relatively low; Rather, the use of screen is the root of the problem.
-
Lack of sleep can affect both mental and physical health.
Why is the screen being spoiled by sleep?
According to Dr. Guunild Johnasen Hetland, the lead author of the study,
“The use of the screen reduces the person’s sleeping time, which does not relieve the body and the brain. It disrupts the time of sleep, not the person more.”
If someone is having difficulty sleeping and suspects that this problem is due to screen, they should reduce the use of equipment such as mobile or tablet on the bed.
Effect on mental health and studies
Research also found that excessive use of the screen could also affect mental state, educational performance and overall health. Concentration and negative effects on studies were seen due to lack of sleep in students.
Dr. Hateland suggested that the screen should be stopped 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime so that the body and brain can be prepared for relaxation.
Screen and sleep relation
This study makes it clear that the use of the screen until late night affects both sleep quality and time. Hateland also said that more global research on the subject is required to deepen the relationship between screen and sleep.
Another study has also revealed that lack of sleep may increase the risk of high blood pressure among the youth, which can lead to heart diseases later.
