It’s that time of the year when Gujarat comes alive with colour, culture, and celebration! This year, Gujarat Day, also known as Gujarat Foundation Day, is being celebrated on Thursday, May 1, 2025. The day marks a significant moment in India’s post-independence history and is observed with pride across the state. From grand cultural events to beautifully lit landmarks, the occasion is more than just a commemoration; it’s a tribute to Gujarat’s legacy.

History behind Gujarat Day

Gujarat Day traces its roots back to May 1, 1960, when the state was officially formed following the implementation of the Bombay Reorganisation Act. Before this reorganisation, Gujarat was part of the larger Bombay State. The demand for a separate state was driven by linguistic and cultural differences, with Gujarati-speaking citizens seeking their own identity apart from the Marathi-speaking population. As a result, the Bombay State was split into two, giving birth to Gujarat and Maharashtra on the same day.

Significance of Gujarat Day

Gujarat Day is more than just a milestone on the calendar; it’s a celebration of identity, resilience, and progress. It honours the cultural diversity, rich traditions, and developmental strides the state has made over the decades. Whether it’s the architectural marvels of ancient temples, the legacy of leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, or Gujarat’s role in India’s industrial and economic landscape, the day celebrates it all.

How Gujarat Day is Celebrated

The Foundation Day is observed with immense fervour throughout the state. Government offices, monuments, and public buildings are decorated with lights, and various districts host cultural programmes, folk music and dance performances, and parades that display the vibrant spirit of Gujarat.

From Garba and Dandiya performances to traditional fairs and exhibitions that showcase local crafts, textiles, and cuisine, every corner of the state buzzes with energy. Schools and colleges also participate in patriotic songs, essay competitions, and historical skits that educate the younger generation about Gujarat’s origins.

Each year, the state government typically announces a theme to guide the celebrations, though the official theme for 2025 is yet to be revealed.
