Why is Dev Diwali celebrated?
According to mythology, a powerful demon named Tripurasura worshiped Brahma to enhance his powers and make him invincible by any god, demon, sage or human. Lord Brahma was pleased with his penance and blessed him. A demon named Tripurasura took over heaven to harass the gods who had received boons. Therefore, troubled by his terror, the gods went to Mahadev for help.
Lord Shiva listened to the prayers of the gods and fought with Tripurasura and killed the demon named Tripurasura on the day of Kartak Sud Poonam. All the Gods and Goddesses were pleased with the death of Tripurasura and came to Kashi and celebrated by lighting lamps. Shivaji’s victory was also celebrated.
Therefore, Dev Diwali is celebrated with great enthusiasm and gaiety every year in Kashi on the day of Kartik Purnima. According to religious scriptures, one’s wishes are fulfilled by donating a lamp after bathing in the Ganges on Diwali. Therefore donating lamps on this day is important.
