Vitamin D deficiency in Indians: India is a tropical country, where there is abundant sunshine throughout the year. However, Vitamin D deficiency is increasing rapidly among Indians. This situation is surprising, but urban lifestyle, cultural habits and environmental reasons play a major role behind it.

Vitamin D deficiency is common among adults in urban areas of southern India, according to a 2024 study published in the journal Scientific Reports. Another study conducted in North India found that 91.2% of healthy adults over the age of 50 had severe vitamin D deficiency. A survey conducted by Tata 1mg Labs in 2023 revealed that one in three Indians suffers from Vitamin D deficiency. This figure increased to 84% among the younger population (under 25), while it was 81% in the 25-40 age group.

Less sunlight and other reasons
* According to doctors, people in urban areas spend most of their time at home or office, due to which their skin does not get enough sunlight. Additionally, the Indian cultural tradition of wearing clothing that covers the body also reduces exposure to sunlight.
* Excessive use of sunscreen to protect against harmful sun rays and pollution is also a major cause of Vitamin D deficiency. Dust, smoke and smog block the sun’s UVB rays, which are necessary for the formation of vitamin D in the skin.
* Indians have more melanin in their skin, due to which they are exposed to the sun for a longer time than people with lighter skin. Additionally, the Indian diet lacks vitamin D-rich foods such as fish, egg yolks and fortified dairy products.

Why is Vitamin D important?
Vitamin D is very important for strengthening bones and teeth, increasing immunity and health. Its deficiency can cause problems like fatigue, joint pain, frequent illness and bad mood. Its deficiency for a long time increases the risk of diseases like diabetes, cancer and rickets.

Simple solution:
* Spend 15-30 minutes in the sun between 8 am and 11 am.
* Include foods rich in vitamin D in your diet, such as salmon, mackerel and fortified cereals.
* Take Vitamin D supplements as per doctor’s advice.
