Navi Mumbai: With the setting in of winter, the vegetable prices at the wholesale market has also dropped, however, the retailers are still selling the story of vegetable prices going high and robbing the common man.

“A month back, the prices had increased for around 15 days. That was because a month prior to that, some of the places had witnessed unseasonal rains causing the crops to decay. The farmer had incurred losses and the rates and increased. But now with the winter setting in and a pleasant climate, the vegetable rates have gone very low except for some of the unseasonal vegetables like drumstick and orange carrot,” Narendra Shelke, one of the vegetable vendors from Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) market, said.

The seasonal produces in the state right now available are Red carrot, green peas and the leafy vegetables. “The produce of orange carrots also called as English carrot and drumsticks goes low during winter and hence the rates increase. The leafy vegetables are the most purchased during winters as the quality is very good, rate also goes down and during winters people prefer having leafy vegetables more,” Ramdas Pavle another trader said.

The orange carrot comes from the state of Madhya Pradesh along with Beetroot and green peas. Cauli flower, cabbage and brinjal mostly come from Gujarat. The red carrot which is highly used during winter, comes from Jaipur in Rajasthan. Yam and pumpkin comes mostly from Southern part of India. All the leafy vegetables are highly produced in Nashik.

The traders say that the retailers have been continuing to sell in a higher price and are sticking onto the trend that of the November month. “The common man usually do not know the wholesale rates and they go with whatever the retailers claim. Once the price increases, the retailers hold onto that trend for some time even if the rates go down in the wholesale market,” another trader said.
