New Delhi: Former chief of Indian Research And Space Organisation (ISRO) K Kasturirangan died on Friday. As per reports, Kasturinandan was suffering from age-related ailments for the past few months. He was 84 years old.
Kasturinandan is reportedly survived by two sons. “He left for heavenly abode this morning at his residence in Bengaluru. His body will be kept at Raman Research Institute (RRI) for paying last respects on April 27,” the officials said as reported by PTI.
Who Was Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan?
Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan was born on October 24, 1940, in Kerala’s Ernakulam. He headed the ISRO from 1994 to 2003. Kasturirangan attended Sree Rama Varma High School and graduated with honours in science from Ramnarain Ruia College in Mumbai.
Chairperson of the drafting committee on New National Education Policy (NEP), Kasturirangan had also served as chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University and chairman of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission.
Until his death, he was Chancellor of Central University of Rajasthan and NIIT University. Katurirangan had also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009. He was the Director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, from April 2004 to 2009.
In the space agency, Kasturirangan served as the director of ISRO Satellite Centre. There he oversaw the development of new generation spacecraft, the Indian National Satellite System (INSAT-2), the Indian remote sensing satellites (IRS-1A and -1B) as well as scientific satellites. Kasturirangan was also the project director for India’s first two experimental earth observation satellites, Bhaskara-I and II.
