Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation from the post of Prime Minister of Canada. Trudeau announced Monday that he would resign as soon as the party chooses a new leader. Liberal Party MPs have been demanding Trudeau to step down for several weeks. After Trudeau’s resignation, the question is who will be the next PM of Canada. Who’s in the race?
Former Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland is leading the race. This is the same leader who resigned from the Trudeau cabinet on December 16. He was the first to demand Trudeau’s resignation. The next day he sent an email to his supporters. In which he rekindled rumors about his ambitions to succeed him.

Liberal MPs who oppose Trudeau have spoken out for Freeland. MPs expressed support towards him. Freeland sent a message of thanks to the prime minister following Trudeau’s announcement on Monday. “I thank Justin Trudeau for his years of service to Canada and Canadians,” he wrote on Instagram. I wish him and his family all the best.

Liberal Party leader Mark Carney is also in the race for the post of PM. He addressed a conference in 2021 and accepted the position as a special advisor to the party in September. He became the Chairman of the Task Force on Economic Development.
Yet he ignored questions about his leadership ambitions. He said that I am not interested in becoming something but in doing something. Carney was not included in Trudeau’s December 20 cabinet shuffle. He issued a statement on Monday saying he would carefully consider a decision on the leadership role.
“I am encouraged and honored by the support I am already receiving from liberal lawmakers and moderates across the country,” he said in a statement.

LeBlanc was previously in the running for the Liberal Party leadership role. He is the Minister of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs. Former Finance Minister John Manley told BNN Bloomberg in December that he would not be surprised if Liberal Party MPs asked him to run for the post of PM in the next election. LeBlanc is said to have the support of several Liberal Party MPs.

The New York Times headline published for Mélanie Jolie in December 2024 became a story in itself. It was being said that Melanie Jolie is a possible successor to Trudeau. The newspaper described him as a top contender to replace Justin Trudeau.
