New Delhi: A huge pile of cash was recovered from the residential bungalow of a Delhi high court judge. The cash was recovered after a fire broke out in the bungalow of Justice Yashwant Varma. The Supreme Court collegium took note of the incident and reportedly transferred Justice Varma to Allahabad HC.

The SC collegium was headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, reported The Times of India. Notably, when the fire broke out at Justice Varma’s bungalow, he was reportedly not in the town. His family members called the fire brigade and police.

After the fire was brought under control, firefighters recovered a huge pile of cash and official entries were being made. Senior police officials were informed about the accidental recovery. When the CJI came to know about the incident, he immediately called for a collegium meeting.

The decision was taken to transfer Justice Varma to Allahabad HC, his parent high court, reported TOI. He was moved to the Delhi HC in October 2021.

Who Is Justice Yashwant Varma?

Justice Varma was born on 6 January 1969 in Allahabad. He pursued the B.Com [Honours] degree course at Hansraj College Delhi University and was awarded the LLB degree by Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh. He was enrolled as an Advocate on 8 August 1992.

“As an advocate at the Allahabad High Court had a varied practice handling matters relating to constitutional, labour and industrial legislations, corporate laws, taxation and allied branches of law,” the official website of the Delhi HC reads.

He was the Special Counsel for the Allahabad High Court from 2006 till elevation. He held the office of the Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 till August 2013 when was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Court.

Justice Varma Was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on October 13, 2014. He took oath as a Permanent Judge of that Court on February 1, 2016. Justice Varma was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Delhi on October 11, 2021.

Some Of The Judgments By Justice Varma:

In October 2022, Justice Varma’s bench closed a proceeding against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain. The proceedings were closed the amended benami transactions law in consonance with a Supreme Court ruling.

In November 2022, Delhi HC’s single-judge bench of Justice Yashwant Varma directed the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate to submit official press communiques and statements issued by the probe agencies to the media regarding their investigations in the Delhi liquor policy case.

In July last year, a bench of Justice Yashwant Varma accepted a petition challenging AAP leader Durgesh Kumar Pathak’s election in the 2022 assembly bypolls. The bench had said that the petition was “prima facie maintainable and triable”.
