Ottawa: Indian-Origin Canada MP Chandra Arya on Thursday officially entered the race for the next Prime Minister of the country. The development came days after Canadian PM Justin Trudeau announced his resignation. Arya is a Liberal MP representing Nepean. He promised to make the country “a sovereign republic”, introducing a citizenship-based tax system, increasing the retirement age and recognising the state of Palestine. He is also in the race for the 2025 Liberal Party of Canada leadership.

“I am running to be the next Prime Minister of Canada to lead a small, more efficient government to rebuild our nation and secure prosperity for future generations. We are facing significant structural problems that haven’t been seen for generations and solving them will require tough choices. I have always worked hard for what is best for Canadians, and for the sake of our children and grandchildren, we must make bold decisions that are absolutely necessary. If elected as the next Leader of the Liberal Party I offer my knowledge and expertise to do so,” Arya said in his X post.

The Indian-origin MP emphasised that Canada deserves a leadership that is not afraid of making big decision. “We have a perfect storm: Many Canadians, especially younger generations, face significant affordability issues. Working middle class is struggling today, and many working families are retiring directly into poverty. Canada deserves leadership that isn’t afraid to make the big decisions. Decisions that rebuild our economy, restore hope, create equal opportunities for all Canadians, and secure prosperity for our children and grandchildren. Bold political decisions are not optional—they are necessary,” he stated.

“With prudence and pragmatism as my guiding principles, I’m stepping forward to take on this responsibility and lead Canada as its next Prime Minister. Join me in this journey. Who Is Chandra Arya?

Chandrakanth Arya, popularly known as ‘Chandra’ Arya. is a Canadian Liberal politician, who represents the riding of Nepean in the House of Commons of Canada. He is is native of Dwarlu village of Sira Taluk of Karnataka’s Tumkur district.

Arya pursued his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Kousali Institute of Management Studies, Dharwad which is affiliated with Karnataka University in Dharwad. He moved to Canada in 2007. Before entering into politics, he was the chairman of the Indo-Canada Ottawa Business Chamber.

Arya was elected to represent the riding of Nepean in the House of Commons of Canada in the 2015 federal election and was re-elected in 2019. Arya He was re-elected in the 2021 federal election. He currently serves as a member of the Standing Committee on International Trade. He became the first member of parliament to speak in Kannada in the House of Commons of Canada in 2022.
