New Delhi: A bill has been introduced in the Lok Sabha by the Central Government to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections of all the states. However, following opposition protests, the bills were referred to a joint parliamentary committee for consideration. After this, the first meeting of the committee of 39 MPs for One Nation One Election was held. In the meeting, a detailed report of 18 thousand pages was handed over to the members in a suitcase for study.
Congress raised questions on One Nation One Election Bill. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi raised the issue of economic feasibility of the bills. He said how much will it cost to implement One Election One Nation, how many EVMs will be required? After the meeting, Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh made a post on X (Twitter) and also posted his picture along with the suitcase in which the report was submitted. According to the PTI report, sources said that Law and Justice Ministry officials gave a presentation to the members present in the meeting, which was discussed by the members. Opposition MPs were against this bill while BJP MPs supported it, saying it was in the interest of the country. An opposition Congress member said that the very idea of holding Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously is against the basic structure of the Constitution.
At the same time, a Trinamool Congress MP said that this is a violation of the democratic rights of the people. In this committee of total 39 members, BJP MP PP Chaudhary is the chairman while other members include Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi, AAP’s Sanjay Singh, TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee etc. At present, the first meeting was held regarding One Nation One Election, now the meeting will be held again in the coming days.
