What will change from 1 April 2025: Important changes in tax, toll, gas and pension

The new financial year has started from 1 April 2025 and with this many major changes are being implemented across the country. These changes will affect crores of people including taxpayers, digital payment users, pensioners and common passengers. This includes changes in income tax slab, new safety rules of UPI, new option of pension scheme, toll tax and amendment in gas prices.

1. New income tax slab system

The government has implemented a new income tax system from the new financial year, in which the original exemption limit has now increased to ₹ 4 lakh. New tax rates are as follows:

  • ₹ 0 – ₹ 4 Lakh: No Tax

  • ₹ 4 – ₹ 8 Lakh: 5%

  • ₹ 8 – ₹ 12 Lakh: 10%

  • ₹ 12 – ₹ 16 Lakh: 15%

  • ₹ 16 – ₹ 20 Lakh: 20%

  • ₹ 20 – ₹ 24 Lakh: 25%

  • Over ₹ 24 lakh: 30%

2. Relief in TDS (Tax deduction at source)

  • TDS on dividend The limit has been increased from ₹ 5,000 to ₹ 10,000.

  • Insurance agents and brokers The TDS limit on commission has been increased from ₹ 15,000 to ₹ 20,000.

  • TDS on interest income The boundary has been increased from ₹ 40,000 to ₹ 50,000 (for non-non-civilians).

3. Change in pension – Unified Pension Scheme (UPS)

The central government employees appointed after 2004 will get the option to join the Unified Pension Scheme. According to this:

  • 50% pension of final salary

  • Dearness allowance adjustment

  • Minimum ₹ 10,000 monthly pension after 10 years of service

4. Changes related to GST

  • Multi factor authentication will now be necessary to generate e-way bill and e-invoice.

  • The new mechanism of the input service distributor (ISD) will also be applicable.

5. New security system in UPI

  • Bank and UPI apps will now check the validity of mobile number at least once a week.

  • The user’s clear permission will be required before issuing the new UPI ID.

  • This permission cannot be sought during transactions.

6. Increase in drug prices

From April 1, some essential medicines such as pain relievers, antibiotics, anti-diabetic and cancer have become expensive. The price hike is minor but can have a widespread impact.

7. Toll tax increase

Toll charges on national highways have been increased by about 3%. Example:

  • car: ₹ 5–10 per trip

  • Light commercial vehicle: ₹ 20–25

  • Bus and truck: Growth up to ₹ 40–60

  • Ghaziabad to Meerut: ₹ 70 to ₹ 75

  • Delhi-Jaipur Highway (Kherki Daula Toll Plaza),

    • Monthly pass: ₹ 930 to ₹ 950

    • Commercial vehicles pass: ₹ 1225 to ₹ 1255

8. gas prices

  • Natural Gas (APM) Price of: increased from $ 6.50 to $ 6.75 per mmbu

  • 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder: Prices ₹ 41 Deduction

    • Delhi: Decreased from ₹ 1,803 to ₹ 1,762

    • Kolkata: ₹ 1,913 to ₹ 1,872

    • Mumbai: ₹ 1,755.50 to ₹ 1,714.50

    • Chennai: ₹ 1,965.50 to ₹ 1,924.50

9. Rules of small home loan relaxation

Now home loans up to Rs 50 lakh in metro cities will be given under priority area loan, which can provide relief in interest rates.
