What is Tripitaka: The basic book and importance of Buddhism

Recently, the Prime Minister of Thailand presented Tripitak to Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Modi accepted it honorarily. It is noteworthy that last year the sacred remains of Lord Buddha were sent to Thailand from India and now India has announced that other sacred relics of Buddha received in Aravalli, Gujarat in 1960 will also be sent to Thailand.

What is Tripitak?

Tripitaka is the oldest and original book of Buddhism. It is composed in Pali language and has a collection of teachings of Lord Buddha, discipline established by him and philosophical ideas.

“Tripitaka” literally means “three baskets”. It was named because it is divided into three major parts, which represent three pillars of Buddhist education.

Three main parts of Tripitaka

1. Vinay Pitaka (disciplinary book)

This part is a collection of code of conduct and rules prescribed for Buddhist monks and monks.

  • It describes 227 rules for monks and 311 rules for monks.

  • It also finds a detailed interpretation of the operation of the Buddhist Union, punishment, and moral principles on the discipline.

2. Sutta Pitaka (Collection of Buddha’s teachings)

3. Abhidhamma Pitaka (philosopher and psychological texts)

This section focuses on the philosophical and psychological sides of Buddhism.

  • It discusses the mind and consciousness, karma and rebirth, mental states and their effects deeply.

  • This part clarifies the metaphysics of Buddhist philosophy.

Importance of Tripitaka

  • Tripitaka presents the teachings of Buddha in preserved and systematic form.

  • This book is a source of moral, spiritual and intellectual guidance of life.

  • It has been translated into many languages ​​such as Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese and English, which reflects its global acceptance.
