New Delhi: India successfully test-fired an advanced underwater naval mine on Monday. The Multi Influence Ground Mine (MIGM) is designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities against modern stealth ships and submarines. The combat firing of the indigenously designed and developed naval mine was successfully undertaken by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy.

The Defence Ministry said the system is an advanced underwater naval mine developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories. The MIGM is designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities against modern stealth ships and submarines.

Bharat Dynamics Limited, Visakhapatnam and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad are the production partners for the system. The MIGM was test-fired amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

How This Naval System Will Be A Gamechanger?

As per the DRDO, the Multi Influence Ground Mine is designed and developed with the aim to give the Indian Navy an edge against most modern stealth ships. MIGM is deployable from ships, COOPs and submarines.

This project involves state-of-the-art technologies in FRP composites, electronics hardware, high-density power packs, software and sensors for the detection of different influences.

The sensors on the MIGM system are capable of detecting acoustic, magnetic, and pressure signatures produced by marine vessels.

MIGM operates in two modes Cable control mode and autonomous mode.

Defence Ministry’s Reaction:

The Defence Ministry congratulated the DRDO and the Indian Navy for successful test-firing of the naval mine.

“The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy have successfully undertaken combat firing (with reduced explosive) of the indigenously designed and developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM),” the defence ministry said on Monday.
