Mumbai: In a decisive move to enhance passenger safety, Western Railway (WR) authorities have implemented a sweeping set of security measures across the Mumbai Central (MMCT) division, covering both long-distance and suburban railway stations.

Responding to growing security concerns, WR has deployed a dedicated Armed Quick Response Team (QRT) at key stations, enabling swift intervention in case of emergencies. Additionally, regular joint flag marches by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) are being conducted to bolster public confidence and deter criminal activity.

Security screening protocols have been significantly intensified. Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs), Hand Held Metal Detectors (HHMDs), and luggage scanners have been positioned at multiple entry points. Dog squads have also been mobilized to carry out comprehensive checks of platforms, trains, and surrounding areas.

“Surveillance has received a major upgrade,” a WR official confirmed. “Nearly 3,000 high-resolution 4K CCTV cameras with night vision are now monitoring the suburban section of the division round the clock. Of these, around 1,000 cameras are equipped with facial recognition technology to help track suspicious individuals.”

To reinforce on-ground safety, the RPF has ramped up train escorting services and increased patrolling in identified vulnerable zones. These steps aim to ensure a safer travel experience for the approximately 30 lakh daily commuters who depend on the 1,400 local train services operated by Western Railway.

Passengers are also being encouraged to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity or unattended items. Authorities can be reached through the railway helpline 139 or the GRP helpline 1512. Awareness campaigns and frequent public announcements are being conducted to familiarize commuters with safety protocols.

“These proactive initiatives reflect Western Railway’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its passengers,” the official added.
