Many parts of India are facing severe cold these days. The twin outbreak of fog and severe cold has affected life. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that a new western disturbance is becoming active, due to which the weather may become colder in many areas including North India. As a result, there is a possibility of rain in more than 10 states and snowfall in some areas.

Continuous snowfall in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh has intensified the effect of cold winds in the northern states. Whereas in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, rain and strong winds will cause increase in cold. In South India also, light rain may occur in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

Outbreak of rain and snowfall in North India

The effect of cold wave has become more intense due to the ongoing snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. There is a possibility of heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh for the next three days. Along with this, rain and strong winds are forecast in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Danger in Haryana and Rajasthan:

There is a possibility of incidents of lightning in Haryana and Rajasthan. Cold winds and rain can further increase the severity of cold in these areas.

Delhi-NCR weather

Light sunshine had given some relief in Delhi-NCR on Monday, but the effect of cold may increase again in the coming days.

Forecast for the coming days:

  • 21 January 2025: There is a possibility of light fog and mist in the evening and night.
  • Maximum Temperature: 25°C, Minimum Temperature: 11°C.
  • 22 and 23 January: Chance of rain and thunderstorm with thunderstorms.

The Meteorological Department has warned that the cold may increase further in Delhi and surrounding areas in the coming days.

Effect of Western Disturbance and Cyclonic Circulation

The main reason for the changing weather in North India is western disturbance and cyclonic circulation.

  • The Western Disturbance active in northern Pakistan and lower troposphere is affecting the weather in India.
  • The cyclonic circulation forming in Rajasthan will cause heavy rain and snowfall in the Western Himalayas between January 21 and 23.

Chance of rain in South India

The effect of weather will be visible in South India also.

  • Cyclonic circulation is active over Gulf of Mannar and Sri Lanka.
  • Due to this, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Lakshadweep till January 23.
  • The weather in South India will also be affected due to north-eastern winds.

Dense fog and cold alert

The Meteorological Department has warned of dense fog in many states on January 23 and 24.

Affected areas:

  • North India: Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chandigarh.
  • Eastern India: Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Odisha and West Bengal.
  • Cold day conditions will persist in some parts of Himachal Pradesh.

Travel and life is likely to be affected due to fog.

warning to fishermen

IMD has issued a special warning for fishermen in marine areas.

  • Fishing has been banned in Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar and Bay of Bengal on January 21 and 22.
  • It has been advised to limit marine activities.
