India has given a clear message to the US on the issue of tariffs. Which shows that India will not quietly accept the wrong decisions of America. India has approached the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding tariffs on steel and aluminum. India has sought consultation with the US under the World Trade Organization’s Security Agreement on this issue.

How much is the tariff?
WETO has said that India has presented a request for consultation with the US. The fact is that on March 8, 2018, the US implemented safety measures by putting 25 percent and 10 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum products respectively. The system came into force on 23 March 2018 and on February 10 this year, the US changed its safety measures on imports of steel and aluminum products. The new measures have become effective since March 12, 2025.

India’s argument
The US has failed to inform the WTO Security Committee to implement these security measures. As a member affected by this decision, India has requested a counseling meeting with the US on the issue. India says that it is expected to get a convenient date and location for quick response from the US on this appeal and for consultation. However, these consultations do not come under the WTO’s dispute settlement system.

China also reached the World Trade Organization.
China recently said that it has filed a complaint against the US arbitrary tariff policy in the World Trade Organization. China has called upon the world to unite on this issue. Now that India has also reached WTO with tariffs, it can be called a big message for America. Even though the attitudes of China and India are different, the US has indicated that India can also challenge its wrong decisions.

Goyal’s tough message:
The recent statement of Union Minister Piyush Goyal is also considered a strong message for the US. Speaking at the Italy-India Trade, Science and Technology Forum, Goyal said that India will never talk on gun tip nor take any decision in a hurry on any issue in the interest of its people. He said that we will always keep India first and ensure that any deal is finalized keeping this spirit in mind. We never talk at gunpoint.

It has become clear from Goyal’s statement that India will not come under any pressure
Nor will it take any step in haste. India is a major trade partner of America. He is already fighting a trade war against China in Asia. In such a situation, he will not want to confront India at any cost. India’s entry into the World Trade Organization and Goyal’s statement, somewhat can put pressure on the US. This has also indicated Donald Trump that India can retaliate. It is worth noting that Trump is already facing criticism over the trade war with China.
