The protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad district of West Bengal took violent form on 11 April. The situation in Jangipur became so frightening that the mob brutally murdered a father and his son. Along with this, there were incidents of police vehicles, common people vehicles, shops sabotage, looting and arson. Many people were also injured in stone pelting.
In view of the seriousness of the situation, the West Bengal Police has formed a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the violence. The 9 -member SIT will be led by DIG of Murshidabad range. The team has been instructed to submit their report by 17 April afternoon. The investigation team will investigate the violent incidents in areas like Jangipur, Samserganj, Suti and Dhulian.
Mamta Banerjee’s charge: “Violence was pre -planned”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made serious allegations against the BJP and the central government, calling the violence “pre -planned conspiracy”. He said that the BJP deliberately raised the issue of Waqf Amendment Act and tried to increase communal tension.
To control the situation, the Central Government has deployed nine Border Security Force (BSF) companies in Murshidabad, in which around 900 personnel are engaged in security of the area. The police have arrested more than 150 people so far and strict security arrangements are on.
“Border security negligence”- Mamta Banerjee
Mamta Banerjee alleged during a meeting that the Waqf Amendment Act is against the Muslim community, which may increase the risk of religious division in the country. He demanded the withdrawal of law from PM Narendra Modi and accused Home Minister Amit Shah of spoiling the environment of the country for political gains. Mamta also claimed that BSF is responsible for infiltration from across the border, and local youths were given money to incite the violence. He accused the central government of negligence in border security.
