West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attended an Iftar at Furfura Sharif in Hooghly on Monday.
Here, WB CM retorted to BJP’s allegation that she is doing politics of appeasement by attending such events, saying, “As I came to Furfura Sharif, they are saying it is due to election and for Muslim appeasement. Why? When I go to Kashi Vishwanath, is it for Hindu appeasement? When I go to a church, is it Christian appeasement? “
“When I perform Kali Puja, no one questions me. Remember, I also celebrate Christian festivals. I visit during Roza, attend Iftar, and take part in Eid celebrations. I visit Punjabi Gurudwaras, participate in Gujarat’s Dandi dance… Bengal is a land of communal harmony. Just as I wished everyone on Holi, I now pray that all prayers during Ramadan are accepted and that everyone lives in peace,” she said.
Yesterday, speaking to the news agency ANI, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar responded to Mamata Banerjee’s scheduled visit to Musafir Khana in Furfura Sharif stating, “This is the politics of appeasement. On one hand, Mamata Banerjee is trying to portray herself as a Hindu so that she can get 4-5% Hindu votes, but on the other hand, she is trying to woo her main vote bank… If Mamata Banerjee has kept a fast in the month of Ramzan, then only she should have Iftar, otherwise she should not. A religious thing like Iftar should not be made into a circus.”
Earlier today, RSMP MLA Nawsad Siddique mentioned that while Mamata had visited several times before, this marks her third visit in her capacity as Chief Minister.
