Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Monday (February 3) sparked a conversation after she said that the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj had contaminated water. She was speaking with news agency ANI.

“I have already spoken on contaminated water. Where would you find high amounts of contaminated water today? [At] Kumbh! Nobody is talking about this. It’s an eye-wash,” said Bachchan.

She alleged that ‘dead bodies’ were being tossed in the water.

She further said that people from poorer and weaker sections of the society are bearing the brunt of the situation as ‘VIPs’ who come for a dip at the Kumbh Mela are given special treatment.

She nudged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath without taking any name and said that those in-charge should explain what is the situation. They should disclose the number of people attending the Maha Kumbh.

Jaya Bachchan’s comments have elicited strong reactions on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) with many users demanding that action be taken against the Samajwadi Party MP.

Maha Kumbh Mela, the largest religious gathering in world, is being held in UP’s Prayagraj. The Maha Kumbh Began on January 13 and will conclude on February 26.

A stampede occurred in the Maha Kumbh Mela in early hours of January 29 killing dozens of people. Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath broke down on camera as he spoke about the tragedy.
