Protests in several districts of West Bengal on Friday became violent against the Waqf Amendment Act. The mob disrupted road and rail traffic in areas like Murshidabad, Malda and Jangipur. In some places, protesters threw stones at policemen and set fire to public vehicles. Police had to use lathicharge and tear gas to control the situation.
Violence in Murshidabad
: The most tension was actually seen in Suti and Shamsherganj in Murshidabad district, where a large number of people gathered in protest against the Waqf Act after Friday prayers. The mob took out the procession and blocked the traffic on NH12. Some protesters threw stones at the police vehicle. After this, there was a clash between the police and the protesters, in which 10 policemen were injured. Some protesters threw bombs like bombs, causing chaos in the area.

The protesters also controlled railway tracks between Dhuliaganga and Nimmatita stations. It is said that about 5000 people sat on the tracks here, affecting many trains including Kamakhya Puri Express. In Malda district too, protesters disrupted railway services by staging a sit -in on the tracks. The movement of trains was also stopped on the Farakka-Azimganj section of Eastern Railway.
Expressing concern over the situation, Governor Dr. CV Anand Bose said that everyone has the right to protest in democracy. But violence will not be tolerated. He warned that strict action would be taken against those who take the law. He asked the state government to take immediate and effective action against the miscreants. He said that continuous contact with the Chief Minister and senior officials has been maintained and the situation is being monitored.
BSF took over the front.
Seeing the deterioration of the situation, the district administration recommended intervening with the Border Security Force (BSF). BSF South Bengal Frontier spokesman Neelotpal Kumar Pandey said that the soldiers have been sent to the spot at the request of the administration and they are working to normalize the situation with the help of local administration.
The Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Shubhendu Adhikari targeted the state government over the incident and demanded the implementation of Section 355. Sharing the video on social media, he said that this violence is the result of anti -constitutional mindset and law and order in the state has completely deteriorated. He demanded intervention from the central government and asked to implement Article 355. The officer also questioned that if BSF can be deployed in Murshidabad, then why not in other districts.
The state police said in an official post that the situation in Sati and Shamsherganj in Jangipur is now under control. The police have dispersed the protesters and traffic on the national highway has become normal. Raids are going on against those who spread the violence and legal action will also be taken against those who spread the rumors.
