Waqf Amendment Bill: A sharp debate between Amit Shah and Akhilesh Yadav, AIMPLB also protested

During the discussion in Parliament on the Waqf Amendment Bill, there was a sharp debate between Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday. During this, Akhilesh Yadav attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fiercely, while Amit Shah also retaliated.

BJP is unable to choose its president: Akhilesh Yadav

During the discussion, Akhilesh Yadav, while taking a sarcasm at the BJP, said, “The BJP calls itself the largest party in the world but has not been able to choose its president yet.” Taking a dig at the government over the Waqf Bill, he said that this bill is full of many flaws and the government has brought it to hide its failures. Akhilesh alleged that the bill was a conspiracy to snatch his assets, houses and shops from Muslims.

He also said, “The BJP is an undemocratic party that considers disagreement as its victory. The bill is an attempt to incite Muslims and divide them.” Akhilesh asked the government that when the land of railway and army can be sold, will not the land of Waqf be given to anyone else?

Amit Shah’s retaliation

Responding to Akhilesh Yadav’s statement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “The BJP president is elected by a long and democratic process. The party has 12 to 13 crore members, so it takes time to select one. Our president does not come from any one family nor is it selected from four-five people.” He taunted, “Akhilesh Yadav will remain the President of SP for the next 25 years, because there is familyism instead of democracy.”

Ravi Shankar Prasad’s statement: Waqf is not a religious institution

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad also spoke on this bill. He said, “Waqf is not a religious, but a legal institution.” Taking a dig at the opposition, he said that Waqf’s properties were not used properly. He asked, “How many schools, hospitals or women’s welfare centers were made on these properties? How many marriages were done for poor Muslim women?” At the same time, while referring to the Shahbano case, he said that the Congress had done politics of appeasement at that time and after that the Congress could never get into majority.

AIMPLB opposition

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill and described it as harmful to Muslims. Senior AIMPLB member Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahali said, “We and other Muslim organizations had conveyed their concerns about the bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee, but it was ignored.”

He said that in many cities including Delhi, Patna, demonstrations were organized by tying black bands in protest against this bill. AIMPLB clarified that he would continue to completely oppose this bill.
