The Waqf (Amendment) Bill from both houses of Parliament – Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha – has been passed by 2025. Now this bill will take the form of law after the President’s approval. Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has expressed its serious concerns about the bill and sought time to meet President Draupadi Murmu.
Muslim Personal Law Board expressed concern
In a letter written by the Board General Secretary Maulana Fazalur Rahim Mujddididi to the President, it has been said that the bill will affect the administrative autonomy of Waqf institutions. Describing it as “completely unconstitutional”, the board said that it is a shock to the religious freedom of the Muslim community of the country.
The release issued by the board said, “We urge the President to meet the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 and its deep concern about its possible effects.”
Congress MP moves Supreme Court
Meanwhile, Congress MP Mohammad Javed has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this bill. He has described the bill as against the provisions of the Constitution. Javed, MP from Kishanganj in Bihar, has also been a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee constituted on this bill earlier.
Javed alleges that the bill has provisions that impose arbitrary restrictions on the management of Waqf properties and it is an attempt to weaken the religious autonomy of the Muslim community. He said that now a person has to prove to be followed by religious beliefs, which is not only impractical, but also a violation of the right to religious freedom.
Owaisi also petition in Supreme Court
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has also challenged the bill in the Supreme Court. He said that this law will harm the religious identity of Muslims and conservation of Waqf properties. Owaisi has expressed several objections to the constitutional aspects of the bill and demanded the court to cancel it.
