New Delhi: To ensure transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf properties, the Vaqf Amendment Bill has recently approved the Lok Sabha and after the President’s approval, it has now become the Act. The purpose of this new law is to digitize Waqf properties, prevent illegal encroachment and determine the responsibility of Waqf boards.
While there are differences about this law in India, this decision has been appreciated in the neighboring country Pakistan. Pakistan’s famous political analyst and security expert Qamar Cheema has publicly supported this reform law. He said that steps taken by the Government of India towards control and transparency on Waqf properties are steps taken in the right direction.
“India’s decision is correct” – Qamar Cheema
Qamar Cheema said, “People illegally occupy the dargahs and religious places. It needs control. There is a similar situation in Pakistan where people occupy mosques. Corruption is done through the dargahs. So the steps taken by the Government of India were necessary.”
Support of Modi government’s decision
Supporting the Modi government’s steps, Cheema said, “Digitization of Waqf properties is an important and welcome decision. The provisions brought to prevent illegal encroachment are also useful. There should be transparency in the management of mosques and dargahs so that their misuse can be prevented. The Muslim community should support these reforms themselves, because these reforms are not able to get long -term benefits if they do not have the earlier improvements, then they do not have the first corrections. Who is responsible for that failure? “
Serious allegations on ‘Waqf Mafia’
Qamar Cheema mentioned the word ‘Waqf Mafia’ and said that the controversy over Waqf property in India has gained momentum. He said, “There are disputes over 50,000 Waqf properties and most of them are in Uttar Pradesh. Many Waqf institutions are running their work arbitrarily avoiding government monitoring. These institutions need internal reforms.” Giving the example of Pakistan’s situation, he said that religious institutions there also oppose government intervention for transparency. Therefore, the misuse of institutions continues without disclosing financial irregularities. In this background, the decision of the Government of India regarding the Waqf Amendment Act is becoming a topic of discussion not only at the domestic but also internationally.
Giving the example of Pakistan, Cheema said that many Muslim religious institutions there make every effort to avoid entering government control there. This gives them a chance to control the money coming in these institutions and continue corruption. He questioned how much corruption is appropriate in Muslim religious institutions? Many fake claims are made in the name of Waqf. How correct is this? He also said, “The Modi government has a majority and they will decide to do whatever they will do. Every government has these rights. You cannot do anything.”
