Maharashtra’s Beed district has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons recently. Adding to this list, ABP Majha reported on Saturday that Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam’s mobile phone was stolen during his visit to Beed.
According to the report, Kadam was in Beed on Friday, where he met the family of deceased sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh at Massajog to offer his condolences.
During this time, Kadam’s mobile phone suddenly went missing. There was a stir as soon as the information about the minister’s missing mobile phone was received. The incident took place in front of media cameras. A case has been registered at Kaij Police Station regarding the missing mobile phone.
Meanwhile, Kadam’s office later issued a clarification on the matter. “Yogesh Kadam’s mobile phone is not lost. A person who was with Kadam—his mobile has been missing,” the report added.
‘Beed should not be defamed because of a few persons’
Beed district should not be defamed because of a few individuals, Minister Pankaja Munde has said, noting that issues related to caste equations are prevalent in parts of the state.
Notably, the murder of Santosh Deshmukh in December last year acquired a caste conflict angle, as the deceased was a Maratha, while most of the accused belong to the Vanjari community, a dominant group in the Beed region.
In 2023, incidents of vandalism and arson were witnessed in different parts of Beed district during the Maratha quota agitation, with people setting fire to the houses of some legislators.
The residences and properties of then MLAs Prakash Solanke, Sandip Kshirsagar, former minister Jaydatta Kshirsagar, and other locations were attacked.
“Beed should not be defamed because of a handful of people. No caste, including mine, should be defamed. We care for each other, and we don’t take political mileage out of it,” said Munde, who hails from Beed.
“The caste equations that are created in the state are not because of Beed district; they exist all across Marathwada. During the reservation agitation, the youth set ablaze the houses of Jaydatta Kshirsagar and his nephew Yogesh Kshirsagar out of anger. They also attacked the residence of Vijaysingh Pandit, MLA from Georai in Beed district,” she said.
Prakash Solanke had to lock himself in a bathroom due to the critical situation at that time, Munde pointed out.
“But this district does not believe in caste conflicts. This district has elected MPs and MLAs from every community,” she said.
