The date of by-election for Milkipur assembly seat of Uttar Pradesh has been announced. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar told in a press conference on Tuesday that elections will be held in Milkipur on 5th February. The result will be declared on 8 February.
Why by-election?
It is noteworthy that in the 2022 assembly elections, Awadhesh Prasad had won from Milkipur seat of Ayodhya on Samajwadi Party ticket. During the Lok Sabha elections held in 2024, Awadhesh Prasad was elected MP from Faizabad seat. This seat became vacant after Awadhesh Prasad was elected MP.
Seat vacant since 6 months
On June 13, 2024, Awadhesh Prasad resigned from the membership of the Legislative Assembly. On December 12, six months had passed since his resignation. The by-election on Milkipur seat had become a question of prestige for BJP.
Dates were not announced earlier
- The special thing is that in its last press conference, the Election Commission had announced the date of elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. But Milkipur was not included in it. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, SP won 37 out of 80 seats in UP. But he was disappointed in the by-elections held in November. In the by-elections held on 9 assembly seats, he won only 2.
- Due to the election petition of former BJP MLA Baba Gorakhnath pending in the High Court, the Election Commission did not announce the date of Milkipur by-election.
- Former Milkipur MLA Gorakhnath had challenged the election of SP’s Awadhesh Prasad from Milkipur seat in 2022, citing discrepancies in the nomination papers. Baba Gorakhnath applied in the court to withdraw the election petition. His views could not be heard due to flaws in the due process.
What did Awadhesh Prasad say?
SP MP Awadhesh Prasad said that the people of Milkipur have always supported me. This time I have won from Faizabad Lok Sabha seat. We are always ready for elections. I am available for my people. I am listening to his problems and at the same time he expressed confidence of victory and said that BJP will be defeated in the elections. CM Yogi is using his full strength. But they will not succeed. The people of Milkipur have full faith in me.
