Canbra : Donation for the federal elections in Australia started on Saturday (May 3). The election is being contested between the Liberal-National Alliance of the current Prime Minister Anthony Albanies’ Labor Party and opposition leader Peter Datton. Parliament was dissolved in Australia on 28 March 2025. A acting government was formed. This was followed by postal polling from 22 to 30 April.

Like India, Australia also have two houses of Parliament. The upper house is called the Senate and the lower house as the House of Representatives. The leader of the party or coalition that scored a majority in the lower house is elected as the Prime Minister. Voting is going on for 150 seats in Australia today. The results of this voting will be announced on the night of 3 May or on the morning of May 4, 2025. Voting is being held today for 40 out of 76 seats in the lower house as well as the upper house.

 

Right to vote in Australia

Voting is mandatory for all citizens above 18 years of age in Australia. If a person does not vote for any unnecessary reason, he is fined 20 Australian dollars.

In addition, Australia has no age limit for the post of Prime Minister. Any person aged 18 or above can contest elections and can become the Prime Minister of the country.

Peter Datton – Peter Datton is currently the prime ministerial candidate in Australia from the Liberal-National Alliance. Peter has been holding the position of Leader of Opposition since 2022. Peter has a bachelor’s degree at Business Studies from Queensland University of Technology.

He worked as a police officer in Queensland from 1989 to 1999. He has worked in Squad and Sex Off a squad. Then in 2001, Liberal Party MP from Peter Queensland constituency was elected and his political life began from here. At that time he took responsibility as the Minister of Health and Panth.
