Team India’s star batter Virat Kohli has set his sights on winning the 2027 World Cup as he dropped a massive hint on his playing future. In a video that surfaced on social media on April 1st, 2025, the 36-year-old said his next big plan is to lift the 2027 World Cup that will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Having retired from the shortest format in 2024, the veteran batter will only ply his trade in ODIs and Tests. The right-hander had already become a part of the World Cup-winning side in 2011 when they lifted the trophy under MS Dhoni and came close in 2023 but Australia pulled off a heist in the final to deny the Men in Blue the title.
During an RCB event on Tuesday, the host asked Kohli about his immediate plans or the ‘next big step’. The Delhi-born cricketer answered it by saying:
“The next big step? I don’t know, maybe try to win the next World Cup.”
Virat Kohli played a massive role in Team India’s Champions Trophy 2025 victory
In his most recent India duty, the former skipper helped the national team win their third Champions Trophy title as he finished with 218 runs in five matches with tournament-defining knocks against Australia and Pakistan.
He had also captained India in the 2019 World Cup in England but the Men in Blue had suffered yet another heartbreaking defeat in the semi-final to New Zealand. Their wait for ICC trophy for the first time since 2011 ended in 2024 by lifting the T20 World Cup.
