Kathmandu: Thousands of people in Nepal are protesting demanding restoration of monarchy. The Nepal government is using the force of the police and the army to stop them. This has caused violence between security forces and protesters in many areas of Nepal. The protesters set fire to several vehicles. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. The Nepali army has been deployed on the streets to control the situation. Two people were killed and 30 were injured in this clash.
According to local media reports, the protesters tried to break the security cordon and also threw stones at the police. In response, the police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, causing protesters and provoked and vandalized and arson in business establishments, shopping malls, offices of political parties, media houses etc. During this time more than 12 policemen were injured. Some royal families of Nepal are also involved in the ongoing demonstrations.
Thousands of protesters waved the national flag of Nepal and took a picture of former King Gyanendra Shah and shouted slogans, such as “Raja, Aao Save Desh”, “Corrupt Sarkar Murdabad” and “We need the monarchy back.” In view of the situation, many people who incited violence have been detained, while several youths have been arrested for violating curfew. In 2008, the Nepali government ended the monarchy by passing a law in Parliament. As a result, Nepal also became a democratic country like India. In such a situation, due to corruption and poor rule of the current government, the demand for monarchy has become intensified once again.
The protesters claim that more than four lakh people gathered to welcome Gyanendra on March 9, while news agencies claim that ten thousand people had gathered. Governments have changed 13 times in Nepal since 2008. Due to continuous change and corruption, poor economic situation, unemployment and poverty, the public’s trust in democracy is ending and hence the protests that are demanding the monarchy have now taken violent form.
