Due to which the proceedings of the House were disrupted and two MLAs were thrown out of the House. The video of this protest has gone viral on social media.

Hana Rawiti Maipi Clerk in the House protests a bill relating to the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi in the House of Commons with the Maori Haka dance. In which his fellow MLAs also participated. A video of Hana and her party performing this Haka dance has gone viral on social media. Protests against the bill sought to change the definition of the 184-year-old treaty between the British Crown and the Maori people.

Why did you protest?

The Treaty of Waitangi, signed between the British government and the Māori tribal community in 1840, guaranteed Māori their land rights. The changes to the bill have come amid arguments that other communities in New Zealand are being treated unfairly. In which it is proposed to give this right to all New Zealanders. Which Maori leaders are opposing.

The audience also protested by dancing

Hana is a popular traditional dance of the Maori. Members of Hana’s party including the spectators standing in the gallery also protested by dancing Hana in the House. Later the proceedings of the House were suspended and two MLAs were expelled.

Who is MP Hana?

Hana is the daughter of broadcaster Potaka Maipi. His grandfather is Taitimu Maipi. Who contributed to the removal of Captain Hamilton’s statue in 2020. Even before this, for the first time in 2023 and New Zealand’s first young MP since 1853, Maipi Clarke had presented a glimpse of Maori culture in the House while taking the oath. At that time his age was 22 years.
