VAT Amavasya: Why is Vat Savitri fast celebrated twice in Jyeshtha month, know the mythological recognition behind it

News India Live, Digital Desk: Vat Amavasya: In Natan Dharma, Vat Savitri Vrat is considered a very important fast for married Hindu women. This fast (fasting), celebrated with devotion and tradition, is observed every year on the next day of Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi (14th day) in Jyeshtha month. Incidentally, Shani Jayanti is also celebrated on this day, which is the birthday of Lord Shani. On this day, women worship the holy vat (banyan) tree, praying for the long life, health and prosperity of their husband. It is believed that those who observe this fast are blessed with unbroken good luck and in many cases, if they want children, they also get the boon of children.

Interestingly, in the year 2025, two Vat Savitri fasts are being celebrated – both are falling in the same month of Jyeshtha. This often raises the question: Why is the same fast celebrated twice a month, and what is the reason behind this dual tradition?

Vat Savitri fast 2025 dates

In the year 2025, the first Vat Savitri fast will be celebrated on 26 May, which falls on the day of Jyeshtha Amavasya (Navchandra). This version of the fast is mainly celebrated in North India. The second Vat Savitri fast will be celebrated on 10 June, which matches Jyeshtha Purnima (Purnima). It is more popular in areas like Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Why is Vat Savitri fast celebrated twice?

According to texts like Skanda Purana and Bhavishya Purana, this fast should be celebrated on Jyeshtha Shukla Purnima (Purnima). However, texts such as the decision Amrit and other regional almanacs suggest that it should be celebrated to Jyeshtha Krishna Amavasya (Navchandra). This difference arises due to following two traditional lunar calendars in India: Purnimant and Amant.

In Purnimant Calendar (prevalent in North India, Nepal and Mithila), a lunar month ends on the full moon day. Therefore, Vat Savitri is celebrated on Amavasya, which is called Vat Savitri Amavasya.

In the Amanta Calendar (prevalent in Gujarat, Maharashtra and southern states), the month ends on Amavasya. Therefore, Vat Savitri is celebrated on the day of Purnima, which is called Vat Purnima.

Both traditions respect the mythology of Savitri, who saved her husband Satyavan from the clutches of death, and thus, both are equally auspicious for worship. Women across the country follow any version based on regional customs and family traditions, confirming their faith and devotion through this holy fast.
