Palghar, Maharashtra – Residents of Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVMC) are set to experience reduced and low-pressure water supply for the next three to four days due to a major technical malfunction.
According to a press release issued by the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation’s Water Supply Department, a transformer supplying electricity to the Kavdas Pumping Station and Surya Nagar Water Purification Center (Kasa Vikramgad), under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) Surya 403 MLD water supply scheme, malfunctioned on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
This transformer failure has resulted in a complete shutdown of the 140 million liters per day (MLD) water supply from the MMRDA’s Surya Dam project.
MMRDA officials have indicated that it will take approximately three to four days to restore the power supply. During this period, the 140 MLD water supply will remain completely suspended. Repair and replacement work on the faulty transformer is currently underway on a war footing.
While the municipal corporation’s own Surya Dam schemes (old and new) continue to provide 200 MLD of water, the disruption in the MMRDA’s supply will lead to a significant reduction in the overall water availability for Vasai-Virar city.
The municipal corporation has urged residents to use water sparingly and cooperate with the authorities during this period. They have assured that efforts are being made to restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.
“The water supply to the municipal area will be insufficient and at low pressure until the MSEDCL power supply is restored,” stated Sameer Bhumkar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, VVMC. “Citizens are requested to use the available water carefully and cooperate with the municipality,” he further added.
The corporation will release further updates as the situation progresses.
