Comedian and Bollywood screenwriter-lyricist Varun Grover voiced his support for Kunal Kamra amid the massive uproar against him and while at it, he took a sarcastic dig at the Mumbai Police for summoning the audience present at Kamra’s show. Grover asked the Mumbai Police to attend the comedian’s show themselves and judge the jokes rather than asking people around.

Grover took to his Instagram handle on Tuesday and shared a video in which he said, “So abhi mujhe pata chala hai ki police jo hai wo Kunal Kamra ki jo audience hai usko bula rahi hai poochne ke liye ki usne show mein kya bola tha. I think ek comedian ki isse badi insult nahi ho sakti hai ki aap uske joke kisi aur se suno. Kharab ho jate hain. Aapko funny nahi lagenge. Toh agar aapko sach mein sunne hain toh Kunal Kamra ke show mein jao, dekho kya bolta hai. Par uske liye aapko show allow karna padega.”

He went on to say, “I think that’s the best way. You will understand what he is saying and it will be funny too. Don’t summon the audience, they’ll ruin the jokes for you.”

“Let jokes live. #kunalkamra (sic),” Grover captioned the video.

On Tuesday, Kamra too reacted to reports of Mumbai Police summoning his audience. He shared a satirical ‘step-by-step guide’ on how to ‘kill an artist’, which he claimed is a ‘political weapon’ used to silence individuals who challenge the status quo.

What is the Kunal Kamra controversy?

For those unawares, the controversy erupted after Kamra, in his standup show titled Naya Bharat, seemingly mocked the political situation in Maharashtra, and presented a parody song on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. This enraged the Shiv Sena workers who claimed that the comedian called Shinde a ‘traitor’, and they went on to vandalise The Habitat, where Kamra performed the show, while also sending him threats and abusing him.

In response, Kunal refused to apologise, stating, “I will not apologize. What I said is exactly what Mr. Ajit Pawar (1st Deputy CM) said about Mr. Eknath Shinde (2nd Deputy CM). I don’t fear this mob, and I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down.”
