Team India’s leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy has broken into the national team’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against England after his sensational performance in the preceding T20I leg. The 33-year-old will also get a chance to press his case for the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy.

The Karnataka-born leg-spinner left almost every England batter confused throughout the series as he finished with 14 wickets in five matches at 9.86 alongside an economy rate of 7.86. He earned the Player of the Match award in the opening game and claimed a fifer in Rajkot, albeit it resulted in a losing cause.

The veteran leggie is uncapped as far as international 50-over cricket is concerned. However, he has snaffled 59 scalps in 23 List A games at 14.18, signalling he will do well in the ODI leg if given an opportunity.

Team India updated ODI squad:

Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill (vc), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana (first two ODIs), Jasprit Bumrah (third ODI), Varun Chakravarthy.

The 50-over series will also be the last three ODIs that both England and India will play before the Champions Trophy that gets underway on February 19. The tourists are most under pressure as they lost the T20I leg 4-1.
